Purpose
The purpose of an organization is its driving force (What does this organization exist for? What do we want to make a difference in the world?). It provides direction, and when there is uncertainty, everyone in the organization can refer to it and ask themselves which of the possible decisions serve the purpose.
While the vision and objectives of an organization have a time horizon of months to years, the purpose aims far into the future, it's unattainable goal. When it is achieved, the organization is no longer needed because it has served its purpose.
Teams also develop a common purpose (What is this team needed for? What is its reason for being, its mission in the organization?).
It provides information about the long-term but does not provide an answer to the question of which goals are the right ones in the short and medium term. If the latter is not specified, there is a risk that companies will get confused and different parts of the organization will aim in different directions. Hence, it is important that a clearly defined purpose does not replace strategy work.
